Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for one (1) full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Painting within the Audain Faculty of Art.
The Painting area at Emily Carr University focuses on developing critically engaged and contextually aware painting-based work. Situated within the interdisciplinary Visual Arts BFA in the Audain Faculty of Art, the Painting area fosters the development of student practice within the context of contemporary cultural production, with a strong technical and conceptual foundation, and a keen awareness of painting as an expanded practice in relation to other disciplines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and related experience:
● MFA or equivalent graduate degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience;
● 2+ years of experience teaching at the post-secondary level or equivalent; experience teaching in a related subject area is preferable;
● intercultural competence;
● strong communication and facilitation skills;
● expertise in a range of painting processes, including the ability to utilize traditional and experimental approaches;
● experience teaching a range of techniques and concepts in painting practice and discourse including observational and experimental approaches to representational painting, as well as conceptual, non-objective and process-based painting;
● strong evidence of excellence in a painting practice that may include hybrid and/or expanded approaches intersecting with other areas such as: sculpture, site-specificity and installation, new media, performance, socially-engaged, community based and/or activist work, public art, collaboration, and other areas of enquiry;
● demonstrated engagement with painting in the broader field, such as the global contemporary art context, engagement with diverse Indigenous and cultural perspectives, and intersectional approaches to art-making and pedagogy.
Expertise in the following areas will be considered an asset:
● the ability to integrate new tools, media and methods into painting curriculum, including new and emerging technologies;
● knowledge of ecological, sustainable approaches and methods.

The review of applications will begin on January 15, 2024 and will continue until the position has been filled. Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate commencement in August 2024. Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience. Salary range $68,385 to $109,584 per annum.
